Anne Frank

Early Life

  • Born June 12, 1929 to the Jewish family of Otto and Edith Frank
  • Born in Rankfurt, Germany
  • Until Anne  was 5 she lived with her parents and older sister, Margot. 
  • The first 5 years were the happy times until 1933 came around

1933- Hitler takes over

  • After Hitler came to power Anne and her family relocated to the Netherlands
  • Life continued as usual until May 10th  of 1940, World War II
  • Germany attacked the Netherlands, The Frank family was in danger again

World War II

  • In July of 1942 Anne went into hiding with her family
  • The Frank family went into hiding behind Otto's (Anne's father) office
  • The Frank family was joined in hiding with other families
  • There were a total of 8 people in hiding for 2 years in a very small space

Life in Hiding

  • The entrance to the secret apartment was behind a moveable bookcase
  • Anne and her family were force to stay inside in fear of being found
  • The hiding spot was known as the Secret Annex 
  • The hiding place had to stay very quiet because of workers below them

The Diary

  • Anne Frank started keeping a diary at 13 
  • Anne Frank not only recorded her feelings but also short stories
  • In the diary was "a collection of beautiful sentences" from other writers
  • Anne dreamed of becoming a journalist after the war

Captured

  • August 4, 1944 Anne and her family were captured at their hiding spot 
  • The group was betrayed by an unknown person and turned into the police
  • The group was first sent to Westerbork, a holding camp
  • Later the group was moved to Auschwitz, an extermination camp

Holocaust

  • The group relocated to the Auschwitz camp September 2, 1944
  • Anne Frank and her family became prisoners 
  • Fortunately Anne, her mother, and her sister Margot stayed together

Concentration Life

  • The women participated in hard labor all day, like hauling heavy stones
  • The men often had to work hard and dig trenches
  • Malnurtion & sickness were common under the cramped , unsanitary conditions

Anne and Margot

  • In 1945 Anne and her sister Margot got moved to a different camp
  • Sadly in March of 1945 Anne  passed away from typhus
  • Margot died in 1945 from falling from her bunk in the camp

Liberation

  • The Auschwitz camp was liberated by Soviet troops January 27, 1945 
  • Around 7,000 prisoners were liberated

THe rest of the FAmily

  • Anne's mother Edith died of starvation in January of 1945
  • The Van Pels family, who stayed in hiding, died in the gas chambers

Otto Frank

  • After being liberated Otto went to Amsterdam
  • While traveling Otto learned of his wife's death
  • Otto still believed Anne and Margot were still alive

The SEarch

  • Otto frank kept hope alive about Anne and Margot
  • Otto placed ads in the newspapers and talked survivors about his daughters
  • July 18, 1945 Otto found out about the death of Anne and Margot

Publishing the Diary

  • When the Franks were captured, a family friend, Miep Gies, kept the diary
  • After Otto found about his daughter's deaths Miep gave Otto the diary
  • June 25, 1947 the diary was published

anne Frank lives on

  • Anne Frank's diary was a big success
  • The diary was translated into more than 60 languages
  • The diary has been also turned into film and theatre versions

The house

  • The Secret Annex located at Prinsengracht 263 has become a museum
  • The original diary of Anne Frank is located here on display
  • Also photographs, film images, & original objects from the family 

The Muesuem

  • The museum features a film version of Anne Frank's diary
  • There is a whole diary room which features some of her original stories
  • The secret Annex is one of the three most popular museums in Amsterdam
  • The secret Annex was restored  and opened in 1960,

FActs

  • Anne Rank named her diary "Kitty" and wrote to the diary like a friend
  • Anne Frank's Diary has sold 30 million copies
  • The typhus epidemic that killed Anne Frank also killed 17,000  others
