IMPACT

  • one of the main ways that tanks changed the conduct of the war had to do with the ability of armored units to exploit breakthroughs in enemy lines. This was one of the main armored doctrines was developed in WWI but the armor was generally incapable of actually implementing that doctrine because it was too slow, too unreliable, and had too little range. Once well supported armored units were developed, first by the Germans and later by everyone else, the ability of a unit or group of units to move through a hole in enemy lines to quickly change the face of a battle was vastly superior when compared to previous conflicts.
