NRA

National Recovery Administration

WHEN

  • NRA was established on June 16, 1933
  • It was created by Franklin D. Roosevelt
  • It was led by General Hugh S. Johnson

PURPOSE

  • To help economic recovery during the Great Depression
  • Also established codes of fair practices

WHO DID IT BENEFIT

  • Workers- Gave power to bargain for better conditions
  • Also allowed them many concessions as part of the codes

WAS IT SUCCESSFUL

  • NRA was not successful
  • NRA boards drafted codes that favored small competitors
  • Big businesses resented NRA for interference in the private sector
  • Johnson turned out to be an unstable leader who alienated business people
  • Prices were raised, low wadges, and longer hours

TODAY

  • NRA does not exist today
  • Invalidated by the Supreme Court in 1935
  • Lost support of the public and government
