What's the significance

  • The national anthem was written to respect the country and to unite the nation with hope and common ideas.
  • It was first written in defense of Fort Mc'Henry

HISTORY OF THE SONG

  • The song was first a poem called "Defense of Fort Mc'Henry"
  • The melody of the song comes from "Anacreon in Heaven"
  • It was written during the War of 1812
  • Francis Scott Key wrote it based upon seeing the American Flag
  • It was first used as a popular political song called "Adams and Liberty" but then officially passed in 1932

MODERN DAY USE

  • We now sing this song on national holidays, state occasions, and public events
  • A law was passed by George W Bush stating that veterans must use military salute even if they aren't in uniform
