COMPOSITION

  • 15 judges
  • Elected to nine year terms
  • 5 judges elected every three years
  • Elected by the UN General Assembly
  • No two judges from the same country

COURT'S ROLE

  • Contentious cases
  • Settle legal disputes submitted by States
  • Advisory proceedings
  • UN and specialized agencies referred legal questions
  • Apply international law and ICJ Statutes

Decision Rule

  • All UN states must comply with decision
  • If parties do not comply - taken before Security Council
  • Make recommendations/ decide upon measures

  • Nicaragua v United States, 1984
  • US violated international law
  • Supporting the Contras (going against govt)
  • Mining Nicaragua's harbor
  • Ruled in favour of Nicaragua - US paid reparations
