  • Born on Jan. 19, 1807
  • In Stratford, Virginia.

  • In Stratford Hall, Virginia
  • At 18, enrolled at West Point Military Academy.
  • After West Point, Lee met and married Mary.
  • She was the great-granddaughter of George Washington.

  • Lee and Mary had 7 children.
  • In 1846, when the U.S went to war with Mexico
  • He served under General Winfield Scott
  • After the U.S victory Lee was held up a hero.
  • In 1859, Lee returned to the army.

  • Lee turned down an offer to command the Union forces.
  • Lee resigned from the military and returned home.
  • On April 18, 1861, Lee agreed to lead the Confederate forces.
  • In May 1862, he took control of the Army of Northern Virginia
  • He drove back the Union Army in Richmond in the Seven Days Battle.

  • From July 1st to July 3rd Lee suffered a round of heavy casualties.
  • Battle of Gettysburg, Almost destroyed his army.
  • By the summer of 1864 Ulysses S. Grant had gained the upper hand.
  • By early 1865 the fate of the war was clear.
  • On April 2nd Lee was forced to abandon Richmond.

  • A week later, Lee surrendered to Grant,
  • Lee returned to his family in April 1865.
  • He accepted a job as president of a small college in Virginia.
  • In October of 1870, he suffered a massive stroke.
  • He died at his home, surrounded by family on October 12th.
