COLONIZATION OF ITALIA

EARLY ROME

  • Began as a tiny river along the tiber river.
  • Founded by Romulus and Remus.
  • Romulus killed his brother and became the first king.
  • Rome was named after romulus.
  • Rome was a kingdom for about 200 years.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW

THE BEGINNING OF THE END!

  • Rome at its height controlled just about all of europe and parts of north Africa and the Middle East.
  • It was one of the largest and best known empires in history because of its emperor Julius Caesar.
  • Romes downfall started with its great emperors death.

THIRD CENTURY CRISIS

  • During the third century the roman emperor, Severus, was killed by his own legions.
  • After which nearly 25 different emperors claimed the throne during a period of 50 years.
  • During that 50 years there was constant civil wars and attacks from Germanic tribes.
  • Eventually Rome pulled itself together but the damage to the economy and trade was done.

Rome Loses Germania!

  • Year 260 Germanic people began to encroach back onto roman lands.
  • As of the year 455 the romans had fully pulled out of Germania due to raids.

ROMANIA AND THE BLACK SEA

  • In the year 271Romans pulled out of their black sea provinces due to Hun invasion.
  • In the same year Romans abandon Romania because of continuos Germanic raids.

AN EMPIRE IN HALF!

  • In the year 292 Roman emperor Diocletian splits the empire in two.
  • He believed the empire was to large to be controlled by one emperor.
  • The last emperor to rule the entire Roman empire was Theodosius.

THE ROMANS LOSE THE BRITISH ISLES

  • In the year 410 the Romans pull out of the British isles due to invasion from the Anglo Saxons.
  • Roman was never able to reconquer the British Isles.

THE VANDALS

  • In the year 429 the Vandals who were pushed out of Hispania by the Visagoths moved to north Africa.
  • They then took all of Rome's north African provinces and used the raw materials that Africa had to become a naval power.
  • Using their superior naval fleet they then sacked Rome in the year 455.

THE LOSS OF GAUL

  • Romans pulled out of Gaul to reinforce Italy from Germanic invasion.
  • The Romans never reconquered Gaul, and the Franks took over control.

FALL OF ITALIA

  • Roman general Orestes gathers an army of Germanic people under him to overthrow the emperor.
  • From then on it was under German rule.
  • The eastern emperor Zenos then invites Osterogoths to help him reconquer Italia in hopes of restoring the empire.
  • The Ostergoths agreed but then seperated from the Byzantine empire as their own nation.
