π1.Sumatra, Indonesia- 26 December 2004π
On the morning of December 26, 2004 a magnitude 9.3 earthquake struck off the Northwest coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.The earthquake damaged the ocean floor, pushing the overlying water up into a tsunami wave. The tsunami wave was about 25 meters (80 feet) tall and killed nearly 300,000 people from nations all around the world.
π2.North Pacific Coast, Japan - 11 March 2011π
A forceful tsunami travelling 800km per hour with 10m-high waves crossing over the east coast of Japan, killing more than 18,000 people. The tsunami had an 9.0 magnitude earthquake reaching the depths of 24.4km- making it the fourth-largest earthquake ever recorded. Approximately 452,000 people were moved to shelters, and still remain their destroyed homes. The World Bank estimates was that Japan will take up to five years to overcome the $235 billion damages.
π3. Lisbon, Portugal - 1 November 1755π
A magnitude 8.5 earthquake caused a series of three huge waves striking towns along the west coast of Portugal and southern Spain, up to 30 m high, in a few places. The tsunamis overwhelmed waves as far away as Carlisle Bay, Barbados, where waves were said to rise by 1.5 m. The earthquake and tsunami killed 60,000 in the Portugal, Morocco and Spain.
