BREAST CANCER

CAUSES

  • Heredity
  • Old age
  • Diet and lifestyle choices
  • A hormone called Estrogen
  • Having children late in life
  • Environmental factors such as industrialization play a role as well
  • Biggest risk factors are gender and age

SYMPTOMS

  • Painless lumps on the breast
  • There also may not be any signs at all

PREVENTION

REGULAR MONOGRAMS AND MONTHLY BREAST CHECKS IS CURRENTLY THE BEST WAY TO PREVENT IT

RADIATION THERAPY

  • High energy energy X-rays are used to kill the cancerous cells and makes sure they don't grow back
  • Side effects include: soreness, skin peeling, swelling, tanning, red discoloration, lymphedema

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS

  • Lumpectomy- removal of part of the breast
  • Mastectomy- removal of the whole breast
  • Other medicines have come out but none have been proven to work

STATISTICS

  • Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among American women, one in eight will get it
  • Breast cancer is less common among women under 50
  • White women are more likely to develop breast cancer, however in women under 45, it is more common in African-American women
