What is figurative language?

Figurative language

  • Literal - when the writer states exactly what they mean
  • Figurative - when the writer creates a meaning that is different from the literal definition
  • This is often through comparing words and phrases

What is a simile?

Similes

  • A comparison between two different words/phrases in a sentence
  • Use words 'like' or 'as' to make the comparison

Examples

  • The thunder was as loud as fireworks.
  • She cried like a baby.
  • He was as busy as a bee.

What is a metaphor?

Metaphors

  • A comparison between two different words/phrases
  • Not using 'like' or 'as'

Examples

  • The sun was a furnace.
  • He had the heart of a lion.
  • She is a ray of sunshine.

  • Simile - The subject is 'as' or 'like' another
  • Metaphor - The subject is said to be another

  • Highlight the similes and metaphors in the lyrics
  • Annotate the lyrics with what you think they could mean
