SKIRT TYPES

Sydney Marbut

STRAIGHT/DIRNDL

  • Straight down, often have an opening in the back seam
  • Or a pleat to allow for movement
  • Dirndl is a straight skirt with extra fullness that is gathered at the waist

A-LINE/ GATHERED

  • A- line is a dress or skirt resembling the shape of an A
  • Gathered is gathered at the top and flares out

YOKE

  • Fitted portion of a garment,
  • Usually at shoulders or hips,
  • With rest of garment hanging from it

4- GORE/ 6- GORE

  • Created from shaped sections, called gores
  • Fits at the waistline and flares out at the hem.
  • Most common styles are 4- gore and 6- gore skirts
  • It can be made from as many as 24 sections

KNIFE- PLEATED/ SINGLE FRONT PLEAT/ STITCHED BOX PLEAT

  • Pleated skirts, different number of pleats make different types

WRAP

  • Wrap around the body and fastens with buttons and ties.
  • A kilt is a pleated wrap skirt that was originally worn in Scottland

FLARED

  • Portion of garment that spreads out or widens

CIRCULAR

  • Forms a circle when laid flat
  • Smooth across the hips and full below
