ASEAN benefits countries through trade, economic stability and political cooperation. It helps form strong alliances and helps provide backbone and support for smaller Asian countries that are members of ASEAN.

Downfalls of being in ASEAN. They refuse to suspend Myanmar as a member, and also reject proposals for economic sanctions. Western countries say that "big in words, small in action"
