Country dance in the western European tradition is believed to originate from pre-16th century folk dances, such as Song dances.
MAIN TYPES
- longways set
- square set
- circle dances
- line dancing
Longways Set: Two lines, usually made up of partners facing each other in the opposite line. Used for contras and reels.
Square Set: formation of four couples facing the center of their group, aligned so each couple faces a wall of the room.
Circle Dance:
a country dance or folk dance, typically following a traditional set of steps, in which dancers form a circle.
line dancing: A line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one or more lines or rows without regard for the gender of the individuals, all facing either each other or in the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time.
contra: considered a social dance.
instrument: the instrument that was used for country dancing is the bagpipes because of the loudness of it. this was not only done in Scotland.
countries it originated in: Scotland, Italy, & Poland. the appeal of country dancing is confined to Christian countries.
