INFORMATION

  • He was homeless in NY
  • He saw how bad the slums were and wanted to show people how horrible the conditions were
  • He photographed many images of slum life
  • It opened up people's eyes and showed them how life was like in the NYC slums
  • Published his book "How The Other Half Lives"

LIFE IN THE SLUMS

  • Overcrowed- they packed as many people as possible into small spaces
  • Disease- since the conditions were so bad, many people got sick
  • Expensive- they were so overpriced even if they were tiny and dirty
  • Dirty
  • No plumbing or heat

Why Riis was important
he photographed the slums to show people how bad life was there. His book, "How The Other Half Lives" opened up peoples eyes and made them want to change these conditions
