MACROMOLECULES

By Elizabeth Nielsen

CARBOHYDRaTES

  • Any large group of organic compounds occurring in foods and living tissues.
  • Carbs are made up of monomers called monosaccharides. Includes starch and sugar.
  • Carbohydrates are used by the body for energy and structural support.
  • Some examples of this molecule include monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides.
  • Carbs are mainly composed of hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen.

PROTEINS

  • Proteins are molecules consisting of one or more chains of amino acids.
  • Proteins are used to build cells and do much of the work inside organisms.
  • These molecules mainly are made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen.
  • The most common protiens are meat, fish, poultry, eggs, cheese, nuts.

LIPIDS

  • A lipid is a fatty acid that is nonpolar. Triglyceride is the subunit.
  • Fats are made of glycerol and 3 fatty acid chains.
  • Lipids serve as waxy coverings on plants, pigments, and steroids.
  • Lipids are made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
  • Some examples are waxes, oils, and fats.

NUCLEIC ACIDS

  • Nucleic acids molecules consist of many nucleotides.
  • They carry the genetic information in a cell.
  • DNA and RNA help the cell make proteins.
  • The elements are carbon, sugar, phosphate and nitrogen base.
  • The examples are DNA and RNA
