DESCRIPTION

  • a condition in which the cells of your lower esophagus become damaged.

CAUSES

  • When stomach acid leaks into the esophagus & creates damage.

SYMPTOMS

  • Barrett's esophagus itself does not cause symptoms.
  • The but the acid reflux that causes Barrett's esophagus often leads to symptoms of heartburn.

TREATMENTS

  • Antacids after meals & before bedtime
  • Proton pump inhibitors
  • Avoiding tobacco use

PREVENTIONS

  • Diagnosis and treatment of GERD may prevent Barrett's esophagus.

PROGNOSIS

  • People who have Barrett's esophagus are at increased risk for developing adenocarcinoma of the esophagus.
  • Recent studies have shown that incidence of the disease is increasing.
