PART 1: POMEGRANATE

THE HISTORY OF THE POMAGRANATE

  • This ruby red fruit first appeared around 4000 B.C. in the East in areas like Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc.
  • Can be found in mythology(Greek, Roman, Egyptian, etc.), religion(Judiasm, Islam, Christianity, etc.)
  • According to Greek mythology, Hades(god of the afterlife) tempted Persephone(daughter of Demeter)
  • with a pomegranate, and when she ate 6 of its red seeds, she became his wife and was forced to live with him
  • for 6 months(one for each seed).This explains the seasons.When shes here, not winter, when shes not, winter.

PREPATATION OF A POMAGRANATE

  • Take a sharp knife and cut about where the middle is.
  • Remove the thin, papery skin that encloses the seed pockets.
  • Put half of it in water and carefully remove seeds. They should float to the top.
  • Repeat again with the other half, when done skim the seeds from the surface.
  • Wash carefully, as they are delicate, and serve on a salad, fruit coctail, etc.

HISTORY OF GARLIC

  • Has been found in Ancient Egyptian pyramids & Greek temples.
  • In Egypt, the Jewish people were fed garlic to build and maintain strength.
  • In Greece, it was used to protect the skin from toxins and poisons.
  • In Anciet China and Japan, it was prescribed to life depression.
  • In the Middle Ages, it was used to combat the Pleague and other sicknesses.

PREPARATION OF GARLIC

  • Peel outer skin off
  • Remove thin membrane
  • Cut or mince the garlic depending on the recipe
  • Use it to flavor and spice up recipes such as meats.
