ROMAN ROADS

Who built it?

Roman soldiers built the bulk of the roads. The Romans could rely on the expertise of the soldiers and the authorities knew that the soldiers would do the best they could to protect and serve Rome.

When they were built

The roads were made in 500 B.C. throughout the expansion and conciliation of the Roman Empire.

Some roasts still exist 2,000 years later.

EXTRA FACTS

• The Romans made a lot of profit from Europe by using the roads.
• Explorers used these roads to send messages quickly.
• The roads were about 24ft. wide and had 3ft. Trenches along the side, and were incredibly efficient.
• The first major roman road called Appian Way, or "Queen of the Roads" made in 312 B.C. It was used as a supply route between Rome and it's allies in Capua during the Second Sammniye War.

Steps to build
1.) at the bottom of the trench, wasba layer of big stones.
2.) broken stones, pebbles, cement and sand as base.
3.) filled in holed on road with cement made from broken tiles.
4.) paving stones were used for the surface of the road. They fitted together tightly.
