PARACHUTES

  • Important because in case of emergency you can parachute out.
  • You need the parachute to land safely
  • Parachutes catch air which creates drag.
  • It slows the landing down.
  • The air makes it float like a balloon.
  • To drop the Mars rover

  • Controlled variables:load,canopy
  • Independent variable: canopy size

GROUP 1 TRIALS

  • Trial 1 time: 1.91 (one second and 91 milliseconds
  • Trial 2 time:2.13( two seconds and thirteen milliseconds)
  • Trial 3 time: 1.86(one second and 86 milliseconds
  • Medium size variable was the most successful.

GROUP 2

  • Controlled variables: canopy size, load,
  • Independent variable: Suspension lines.

GROUP 2 TRIALS

  • Our group used 13 inch suspension lines.
  • Trial 1 time:2:61 ( two seconds and 61 milliseconds
  • Trial 2 time: 2:78 ( two seconds and 78 milliseconds
  • Trial 3 time: 2:68 ( two seconds and 68 milliseconds.
  • Our average time was, 2:69 ( two seconds and 69 milliseconds.

GROUP 3 TRIALS

  • Trial 1 time:2:23(2 seconds and 23 milliseconds.)
  • Trial 2 time :2:08( 2 seconds and 8 milliseconds)
  • Trial 3 time: 2:45( 2 seconds and 45 milliseconds)
  • Our teams average was, 2:25( two seconds and 25 milliseconds.
  • Our group used the coffee filter material

FINAL PARACHUTE

  • Our team decided on the garbage bag material
  • Catches air very good
  • Has no air holes to let the air pass
  • Biggest size canopy
  • 13 inch suspension lines

PERFORMANCE

  • Trial time 1:23( one second and 23 milliseconds)
  • Trial time 2: 4:18( four seconds and 18 milliseconds )
  • Trial time 3: 4:18( four seconds and 18 milliseconds.
  • Our average time was 3:86
  • Our average drop speed was 2:33( two seconds and 33 milliseconds
  • MISSION READY!!!

ANYTHING ELSE?????

  • The biggest size parachute did the best. It catches more air

During our time experimenting with parachutes I learned many logical and interesting things. Starting off with our planets I learned a lot a facts about the planets such as, Venus will crush a person. I also learned that Mars would be the best planet to land on. In teams we designed creative space shuttles to launch to Mars. After that we learned about the different types of variables, independent and controlled. This is where we started making our parachutes. The first trial we tested the size of the canopy. I learned that the biggest canopy would catch the most sir. There would be more drag to slow it down. The second trial we tested the size of the suspension lines. Overall the biggest suspension lines were the most successful. ( to be continued on next slide)

I learned from this trial that bigger lines would let more air in, and that would help the canopy catch air. The third trial we tested the material. The garbage bag material caught the most air. The final trial we got to choose whatever we wanted for material,size, and suspension lines. The area had to be under 150 inches. Learning about parachutes and space was a lot of fun and I think I learned a lot.
