TROPICAL CYCLONE YASI

Tropical Cyclone Yasi was a very dangerous and destructive tropical cyclone that occurred in northern Queensland, Australia on 3 February, 2011, causing horrific damage to areas all over. Yasi originated from a tropical low near Fiji.

GEOGRAPHICAL PROCESSES

  • water erosion were one of the main causes
  • Land clearing/habitat destruction leads up to cyclones
  • An area of low pressure
  • Severe winds
  • Rainfall

IMPACTS OF THE CYCLONE

  • The damage was worth about 3.8 billion dollars US
  • The cyclone damaged the Great Barrier Reef dramatically
  • Approximately 15% of coral was damaged severely
  • Homes were destroyed
  • Families were lost

THE RESPONSES GIVEN

  • Many charity funds
  • Red cross staff and volunteers helped repair
  • Government gave money for the damage

BLACK SATURDAY BUSHFIRE

The Black Saturday bush fires were a series of severe bushfires that caused burning all across the Australian state of Victoria on Saturday, 7 February 2009. This disaster occurred during extreme bushfire weather conditions which lead up to about 400 individual fires

GEOGRAPHICAL PROCCESSES

  • It was was on the hottest summers on records
  • There was a drought that was going on
  • Heat waves across SA and Victoria
  • Strong winds, which caused fires to spread more

IMPACTS OF THE BUSHFIRE

  • Approximately 4.4 billion worth of damage
  • Thousands of native animals were killed
  • Burned over 400,000 hectares of land
  • 173 people lost their lives
  • Over 1800 homes were destroyed

THE RESPONSES GIVEN

  • Donations were made to help out
  • Immediate community response
  • Governments help by giving money to help

SIMILARITIES IN THE PROCESSES

  • wind affected both of the hazards
  • Habbitat destruction
  • Homes and families destroyed
  • Costed a enormous amount of damge

DIFFERENCES IN THE PROCESSES

  • One hazard was fire based, one was wind
  • Different locations
