PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PARCC for Parents

Phillis Wheatley Community School

46 states & US Territories have adopted the Common Core Standards.

10 states (LA is one) are using PARCC.

What is Common Core...

...and what does it mean for my child?

PARCC is linked to what students need to know for
college & careers.

What does a testing session look like?

  • in a classroom or small group space

  • teachers can repeat directions, but cannot answer specific questions
  • students can review and change answers within the testing session only
  • ALL TESTS ARE TIMED unless the student has extended time as an accomodation

What's different about testing week?

  • Students must be ON TIME to school in order to test. If students are absent or late, they will have to complete make-ups.
  • We will allow your child to call after testing, and you may come pick them up.
  • We may be walking to the STCC some afternoons so please complete permission slips which will be coming home soon.
  • Wednesday is a full day of school.

Students are being measured on the knowledge, skills,
and practices embodied by the Common Core Standards assessed at
their level.

We will use PARCC data for:

  • assisting teachers in supporting students
  • informing decisions about curricula, instructional & PD needs
  • informing parents & students on progress towards “on track” readiness

We will NOT use PARCC data:

  • To impact student’s grades
  • To retain students
  • As the only measure for placement

Things to do with your learner for ELA:

  • Encourage your child to read everything & anything.
  • Stories-Newspapers-Magazines-Biographies-Science-History
  • Talk about what they are reading at school
  • Practice computer skills at home (use iReady or ST Math)
  • Take a practice test of your own at www.parccplace.org

Things to do with your math learner at home:

• Have children illustrate the math they were
thinking in their head and discuss it out loud.

• Encourage children to try more than once
while solving problems, to build stamina and
develop their critical thinking skills.

• Instead of giving them the answers, ask them
to think of different ways they can solve
problems.

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS?
Teachers will be in the meeting space
to answer questions, pass out report
cards, and sign families up for
one-on-one conferences at a later date.
