MILITARY JUNTA

SOCIAL STUDIES 2014-2015

A military junta is a form of government led by a group of military leaders.

There have been many military juntas in the past, as well as the present. Thailand has had over 10, and actually currently has one. About 20 other countries have attempted or done military juntas in the past, but only 1 or 2 and not as many as Thailand has. Burkina Faso is the only other country that currently has a miltary junta.

This form of government is an oligarchy because it has a small group of the military in charge.

A military junta basically has only one branch: the military. The small group of government typically consists of several generals, marshals, and colonels.

A military junta is ruled by a military force and, oftentimes, fear. When a country has a military junta as their form of government, the people part of the military group of leaders use their power and revoke the constitution.

The citizens living under the power of a military junta would not really have all their rights because the constitution is no longer in action, so the government could do what they wanted.

Having a military junta can be beneficial if the country is in need of a quick response to problems. With several people in charge, news travels fast and they can quickly get the job done.

A military junta often can also be known as a military dictatorship because the military leaders use fear to control the citizens and empower themselves.
