When the stock market crashed in 1929, people lost their jobs and homes. President Hoover didn't help at all during the Great Deppression. The sign on the background says," I know 3 trades. I speak 3 languages. Fought for 3 years. Have 3 children. And no work for 3 months but i only want 1 job."

Hoovervilles

  • The great depression put people out of work and they lost their houses.
  • The government built shacks in villages.
  • The villages were called Hoovervilles to show how much President Hoover helped.
  • People used these shacks as their homes because they lost their homes.

The Dust Bowl.
During the 1930s, the southern Great Plains suffered an enviormental disaster. The region became known as the Dust Bowl. When the drought struck in 1931, crops died. The soil dried up and blew away in the strong prairie windstorms. The drought and the storms -"black blizzards"-continued for years. In some areas, the dust piled in drifts as high as 6 feet.

The New Deal
The New Deal was a set of laws and regulations that affected banking, the stock market, industry, agriculture, public works, relief for the poor, and conservation of resources. The banks closed for 4 days so everyone could have time to recover from everything declining.
