PRESENTATION OUTLINE
NICCOLÒ FONTANA TARTAGLIA
Niccolò Fontana Tartaglia created a formula to solve cubic equations. He also invented a way to find the square root of a negative number.
BACKGROUND
- Born - Brescia Italy in 1500
- Spent all their life In Italy
- He went to Padua
- Taught himself how to do math at a young age
- He had 1 sister and 2 brothers
- His dad was a deliver but he got murdered doing his job
- Was married
- Was poor for all of his life
- Got wounded on his face
- Went to a tutor but did not have money to pay for consistent visits
AREA OF GREATNES.S
- Created formula to solve cubic equations
- Engineer
- Formula for square root of negative number
- Self taught
- Went to a good school
AREA OF GREATNESS EXAMPLE
SETBACKS
- Dad died
- Only boy in the family
- Poor
- Didn't go to a good school
When the cube and the things together
Are equal to some discrete number, 1
Find two other numbers differing in this one.
Then you will keep this as a habit
That their product shall always be equal
Exactly to the cube of a third of the things. 2
The remainder then as a general rule
Of their cube roots subtracted
Will be equal to your principal thing.
3
1 [Solve x3 + cx = d]
2 [Find u, v such that u - v = d and uv = (c/3)3 ]
3 [Then x = 3√u - 3√v ]
P
AWARDS AND HONORS
- TARTAGLIA WON AGAINST FIOR IN A MATH CONTEST
- ALTHOUGH HE WON HE DID NOT ACCEPT THE REWARD
