WHAT IS IT?

  • Symptoms include fever, headaches and swollen lymph nodes.
  • Diagnosis is made by testing blood or lymph samples from the patient.
  • The bacteria look like knats.

HOW COMMON IS IT?

  • Yersinia pestis is commonly found in animals natively & worldwide
  • In the world, 1000-3000 cases involving this bacteria is found
  • People did get immune to it when it was first discovered

HOW DOES A PERSON GET IT?

  • Those of european heritage are more likely to get it.
  • It is an infectous disease.
  • Will spread quickly in areas with a high pest population.

WHAT IS GOING WRONG?

  • Infects lymp nodes
  • Travels through lympatics
  • Causes severe swelling
  • Cause bubos in armpit, neck and groin
  • Infection mostly seen on sight of bite

CAN WE TREAT IT?

  • There are vaccines and antibiotics.
  • The vaccine grants immunity.
  • The antibiotics stop the it from multiplying and kill it.
