WHO WAS DA GAMA?

  • Born in Portugal in 1469
  • Sailed four more times than Columbus
  • Grew up sailing and was a good leader
  • Joined short trading voyages when he was 15 years old and travelled to Africa
  • Father's name was Estavo and his brother's name was Paulo
  • Died on December 24 1524

WHAT DID DA GAMA DO?

  • Da Gama killed manyMuslims
  • He helped Portugal become the richest and most powerful countries in Europe with his trading
  • Da Gama fought the Arabs
  • Sailed to India to trade his goods for riches
  • He discovered a trading route to the far east

WERE DID DA GAMA DO HIS EXPLORATIONS?

  • He sailed 27,000 miles over the ocean
  • He sailed around the Cape of Good Hope to Mozambique to Malinda and finally to Calicut and sailed back to Portugal

WHEN DID DA GAMA DO HIS EXPLORATIONS?

  • He did most of his explorations between 1497-1499
  • Did most of his explorations in uncharted waters

WHY DID DA GAMA DO HIS EXPLORATIONS?

  • King Manuel and King John the third sent him to the Far East in search of riches, jewels, gold, silver, pearls and other precious stones

WHAT TOOLS DID DA GAMA USE?

  • Da Gama sailed aboard the São Gabriel
  • Many of Da Gama's crew had scurvy
  • Explored by sailing on four ships with 160 men and brought stuff like cloth, bells, hats, flags and trinkets so he could trade them for gold and riches

HOW DID DA GAMA EXPORATIONS IMPACT THE WORLD?

  • He took over the trade in India and madePortugal the most powerful country in the Europe
  • Became known as the 'Admiral of the Indian Sea'
  • Because of his explorations we learned about other countries and people
  • Built many trading colonies in parts of the world
  • Mapped many unknown waters
  • Mapped undiscovered waters
