THE COST OF PURSUING A DREAM

Sanity

The cost of perusing a dream full heartedly, dedicatedly, and unhealthily can cost a great deal of ones mental sanity. One can become obsessed and focus only on themselves reaching whatever goal was in mind- wether it be love, wealth, or being the absolute best.

In Gekko's speech, "Greed is Good", it is stated that "Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms -- greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of mankind" ( Gekko). This ties to The Great Gatsby because the characters throughout the novel seem to all have a set dream in mind and would risk so much to achieve them. They are focused on themselves and their needs first, before others' needs and desires. It has driven Jay Gatsby out of his sound mind and leads to his eventual death in the book.

In the poem "The Yellow Wallpaper", the wife is diagnosed with depression and her husband has locked her in a room with old, tattered, swirly yellow wallpaper. She had a dream of writing and when she was diagnosed with insanity, her writing was limited. But because she loved her home, family, and husband, she followed orders and stayed. Later in the poem, she loses her sanity and starts seeing women in the wallpaper and "creeps" around the room, scaring her husband and costing all her sanity.

In Suzanne Collins "Hunger Games" Katniss must endure and survive the games in order to pursue her dream of taking care of her family and saving her sister. After her victory, she envisions and imagines what she went through when she killed people, and would see the event and relive it at random times. Killing people and enduring the games cost her her mental sanity, but she did achieve saving her sister and helping her family, which was her dream.

These two women both share a dream of having a safe, sound, and loving family and both lost their sanity trying to achieve it. They both see things that aren't there and it was all at the price of a dream.

In the "Jobs" documentary whenever things turned into turmoil, the men turned away and left with their fortunes. They followed a dream of greed and wealth and discarded helpless people who needed help.
