ROMAN EMPIRE A.

  • Republic: a state in which supreme power is held by the people.
  • Patricians: an aristocrat or noblemans
  • Plebeians: a commoner in Ancient Rome
  • Tribune: an official in Ancient Rome chosen by the plebeians to protect their interest

  • Earliest attempt by the Romans to create a code of law
  • Both the patricians and the plebeians followed these laws

PUNIC WARS

  • FIRST PUNIC WAR( 204-241B.C) WHO FOUGHT: ROME AND CARTHAGE
  • Why: Rome decided to intervene in a dispute which exploded in conflict
  • Outcome: Rome defeats Carthage and Sicily became rome's first overseas province

SECOND PUNIC WAR(218-201B.C)

  • Who fought: Rome and Carthage
  • Why: Hannibal swore a blood oath against Rome
  • Outcome: Rome defeats Carthage again and is forced to give up

B. REPUBLIC TO EMPIRE

  • The fall of the Roman Empire was slow and took place for over a century
  • Caeser: began is political career in 78B.C and quickly gained power
  • He changed the calendar from the sun to the moon
  • Roman dictators saw him as a threat and killed him
  • Augustus was Caesars from that took his place in line for the throne

EXPLAIN:

  • Pax Romana: means "roman peace" from 27B.C to 180C.E
  • Five good emperors: Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antonius Pius, and Marcus Aurelius
  • Life in imperial Rome: women- life was hard, had to work
  • Slaves- we're property owned and living conditions were brutal
  • Gladiators- they were famous, and was the entertainment of the show

LIFE IN IMPERIAL ROME CONTINUED:

  • Children- we're taught well but often exposed
  • Education- for young males, learn how to be good, intelligent

DECLINE OF ROMAN EMPIRE

  • Government- corrupt
  • Emperors- became lazy, greedy, and made unwise choices.
  • Military- typical soldier became loyal to money
  • Economic reasons- people, we're greatly attracted to slaves
  • Social reasons- they lost all the hard-working and golden virtues. Temptation of money

DECLINE OF ROMAN EMPIRE CONTINUED:

  • Paintings and sculptures: artist were very good because did different things
  • Latin- language of the empire, and governors
  • Architecture and technology- had one of the most advanced set of technology of its time.
  • Technology was lost during the turbulent eras of late antiquity of the Middle Ages
  • Roman systems of law- the legal system of Ancient Rome, forming the basic modern civil law
