He modeled several of his characters on family members, including a grandfather who played in the Negro Baseball League and another who was a famous bandleader during the Depression

PLOT

With nothing but his suitcase and his running list of "Rules and things for having a funner life and making a better liar out of yourself" - orphaned Bud uses the only clue his mother left him to try to find his father.
