If you are challenged don’t walk away from it
“You move on whitey,” a man said, “You pick up your gear and move on out. Time to go home now.”
Maniac stood there and said, “I am home.”
Never give up on someone even if you are upset
Amanda said, “You don’t think you’re taking out any of my books. And you can forget about reading the encyclopedia.
“I’ll Join a library.”
“Ha you can’t you need an address.” Maniac ran away, but came back at midnight because he wasn't going to leave the Beales.
If you are bullied stand up for yourself
John said, “Get out of here runt. This is a little league record. You ain’t in Little League.” Maniac walked over to the next batter in line, took his cap, and stepped up to the plate.
What comes around goes around
A little kid, whose sneaker laces Maniac had untied, Gave him a three pack of butterscotch krimpets.
Don’t brag or you’ll not be liked by who you beat.
Maniac ran backwards and beat Mars Bars. After that Mars Bar didn't like him for a while.
How the Narrators point of view
Maniac Magee is told from third person, but the narrator is focused on what Maniac is doing. For Example, when Maniac had dinner with the Pickwell’s we knew that they always served people the way they served Maniac because it was third person. If we saw that event from Maniac’s point of view we might think that the Pickwell’s treat other people better. We wouldn’t know that they were a whole family. We might think the adults own an orphanage.
Frederick went to an abolitionist meeting and told about his life as a slave
This began a series of speeches that Frederick gave to people to try to end slavery. He became famous from those speeches
Ms. Sophia and some of Frederick’s friends taught Frederick how to write and read.
This made Frederick a very smart and clever, so he could escape. None of the people thought it would though.
Frederick had a fist fight with his slave owner and won
What happened was Frederick was going to be whipped by Mr. Covey, but he fought him. This was a major turning point in his life. After that he planned to escape a few times. He learned if you stand up for yourself you’re rewarded.
How did Maniac respond to
One major challenge for Maniac was when Grayson died. Maniac was upset when he died. He responded to this by getting him a grave. He also responded to this by taking some of their things and running away from their home. One effect of this was him finding Russell and Piper. Another effect of Grayson dying was him freezing and being really hungry. A third effect of Grayson dying was Maniac running all over town doing nothing.
Is this a thing you've been listening to? Is this a piece of property to be owned? Or is this a man? He said this because he was a slave. He also said this because he was at an abolitionist meeting.
One lesson that applies in my life is "What goes around comes around." It applies to me because when I punch my brother and am mean to him, then I punch him and it keeps on going. In the end it builds up and I make him cry.
