  • You know that the Declaration of Independence is why we celebrate the 4th of July. But there is plenty more you don't know about this document that gave us freedom. These 10 facts will expand your knowledge on one of the greatest pieces of paper in history.

FACT 1

  • 1989 IN ADANSTOWN, PA, A DUNLAP BRAODSIDE WAS TUCKED BEHIND AN OLD PICTURE FRAME and it cost $4. That version of the Declaration of Independence was eventually acquired by Norman Lear for 8.1 million dollars.

FACT 2

  • there is a visible message on the back that reads, “”Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776.” experts believe it was a label added at some point when the Declaration was in storage.

  • Ever wondered what The document was about? It stated the reasons the 13 American colonies wanted to be free of Great Britain's government.

  • The printer, John Dunlap, was asked to make about 200 copies to be distributed throughout the colonies. Only 26 Dunlap Broadsides have survived.

  • John Hancock was the first man to sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. John Hancock was the President of the Continental Congress at the time of the signing.

  • 8 out of the 56 men who signed the document were born in England.Gwinnett Button and Robert Morris were born in England, Francis Lewis was born in Wales, James Wilson and John Witherspoon were born in Scotland, George Taylor and Matthew Thornton were born in Ireland and James Smith from Northern Ireland.

  • There was a 44-year age difference between the youngest and oldest signers. The youngest was Edward Rutledge only 26 at the time.

  • On July 4, 1776, Congress approved the final text of the Declaration. It wasn’t signed until August 2, 1776.
