Entrepreneurs And the Unseen Challenges

By Hayden Carlson
For the interviews conducted I was able to meet in person for one and the other was done over the phone. Both people being interviewed were business owners who were related to me.

Xtreme Renovations

Xtreme Renovations is general contracting business ran by Nels Carlson. The interview was ran on Tuesday in the main office of Xtreme Renovations and enlightened me upon the toughest current challenge that Nels was facing. Which turned out to be employees. The problem with his employees is that they often didn't fulfill all the requirements for Xtreme Renovations such as them not having a truck, tools, or being occasionally late. These things hinder XR's ability of growth and making a profit through his jobs.

Mile High Plumbing

Mile High Plumbing is my uncle's business down in Colorado. Clearly, I couldn't meet in person with him so instead we held the interview over the phone on Tuesday as well. The challenge that Jamey Leonardi had was time management and getting overwhelmed with paperwork and giving the customers his full attention especially during the winter months when the pipes would freeze.

Management for Profit

Some findings from the business owners were that managing time is key to success in the business, being able to schedule around so that they are most efficient with every part of their day. Also, the idea that finding the right employees so that the employees can do the work while they(owners) get more jobs and send off estimates/invoices. Lastly, keeping good relations with the customers who always want the owners full attention on their job and nothing else.

Making a Business Work

Efficiency through teaching
Reviewing through what was discovered upon in the interview my biggest idea as a good for these and any businesses would be a "book" that gets methods from successful and even unsuccessful businesses about what went right for them or what went wrong. People will be more confident if they've seen what others have gone through it gives a foundation or a path instead of just going blind. This could help with scheduling their work and even what to do when interviewing new employees to determine the best fit.
