Religion is a big part of Japan's culture with two main religions. The first religion is Shinto, which is their first, indigenous religion. Shinto is a collection of mythology, folklore, and history. In Shinto, it is said that two gods created the islands of Japan, one male and one female. These gods were given a spear to create the island of Japan. Since they created the islands directly, Shinto is a religion that is linked strongly to the beauty of nature and the people of Japan, therefore it is very strong in the Japanese people. The other religion is Buddhism, specifically Zen Buddhism. Zen Buddhism encourages the practitioner of the religion to seek enlightenment through personal meditation. This fits neatly with the traditions and customs of the Samurai of Japan.
The art of Japan is stunningly beautiful, ranging from skillfully crafted paintings to lush, beautiful gardens. For instance, there are the Zen Gardens. The Zen Gardens are gorgeously grown and decorated gardens, comprised of combed sand, carefully placed rocks, and skillfully trimmed trees and bushes. These gardens are usually the place to meditate in peace. Then there are the Noh Theaters, one of the oldest types of theaters in the world. The actors were elaborate masks and are accompanied by musicians.
