KYPHOSIS (HUMPBACK)

ABNORMAL CURVATURE OF THE SPINE, MOST OFTEN THE THORACIC PART

CAUSES FOR ADOLESCENT

  • Growth retardation
  • Improper development of epiphyses
  • Poor posture may worsen kyphosis

CAUSES FOR ADULT

  • Aging
  • Degenerative disc disease of the intervertebral disc
  • Disc fracture from osteoporosis

SYMPTOMS FOR ADOLESCENT

  • May be no symptoms
  • Visible curvature of back
  • Thoracic spine may be mildly painful, tender, tired, or stiff

SYMPTOMS FOR ADULTS

  • Roundness off upper back
  • Pain
  • Back weakness
  • Fatigue

TREATMENT

  • Exercise and firm mattress
  • Back brace
  • Spinal fusion or grafting
  • Harrington rods

PREVENTION

  • Some forms you can't prevent
  • Maintaining good posture
  • Eating food rich in calcium and other vital nutrients
