PURITANISM

WERE PEOPLE GOOD?

  • The Puritans did not believe that people were good
  • They believed in original sin
  • Children were quizzed on sermons
  • Children had to go to school to read the Bible

HEAVEN VS. HELL

  • Predestination
  • God determines who is saved
  • Hardworking people will go to heaven
  • Lazy people will go to hell
  • Didn't believe in free will

RELIGIOUS DIFFERENCES

  • Society was based on their religion and scrtipture
  • Scripture = God's law
  • Didn't tolerate religious differences- everyone must be a Puritan

CIVIL GOVERNMENT

  • Believed that the government was responsible for enforcing people's morality
  • Anne Hutchinson- went against Puritan laws
  • Government sent her away for her disobedience
  • Roger Williams- protested the taking Indian land
  • Government punished him and he fled the colony

EQUALITY

  • Women were considered tools of satan
  • Therefore they had almost no rights
  • Not allowed to sign contracts, own property, or conduct business
  • Believed that Eve's temptation was proof that women were more susceptible to sin
  • Were required to dress modestly by covering their hair and arms

WORK ETHIC

  • Believed that hard work was the only thing that would get them to heaven
  • Life as a good hardworking Puritan = heaven
  • No time for fun or free time because that was only for heaven

THE WILDERNESS

  • Puritans believed that any free land was meant for cultivation
  • This could be land for agriculture or for new settlements
  • Even so, they believed the wilderness was the home of Satan
  • They were reluctant to go into the wilderness for fear of Satan and Indians

WITCHCRAFT

  • Did not want influences of the devil in their community
  • Anyone who was remotely suspected of witchcraft was executed
  • More women were executed than men because of their position in society
  • Sometimes those accused of witchcraft would be stoned, drowned, etc.
