What is Pneumonia?

  • Pneumonia is a condition that affects tiny air sacs in your lungs (alveoli).
  • It causes the alveoli to get inflamed and filled with fluid.
  • Because this happens in your lungs, it makes it harder to breathe.

  • Millions of people in the USA are affected by Pneumonia.
  • It can be caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi.
  • It can infect either 1 or 2 lungs.

  • Pneumonia makes your lungs get inflamed and filled with fluid, making it harder to breathe.

Who is at risk of it?

  • Babies/young children
  • People over 65
  • People with long term heart, lung and kidney diseases or diabetes.
  • People who smoke or drink alcohol
  • People with HIV

Pneumonia in Kenya

  • Some childrens' skin turned blue-black due to lack of oxygen.
  • Many people in Kenya died because of Pneumonia, however it is easy to treat.

Can it be cured?

  • If the pneumonia is mild, it can be treated at home with rest, antibiotics and drinking fluids.
  • It can take up to 6 months for you to feel better.

  • 1 week- the fever should start to wear off.
  • 4 weeks - chest pain / mucas production should start to reduce.
  • 6 weeks-coughs and breathlessness should start to reduce.
  • 3 months-most symptoms should of gone but you'll still feel fatigued.
  • 6 months-no symptoms shown.
