PRESENTATION OUTLINE

TROPICAL RAINFOREST

BY: OLIVIA SUN OCTOBER 2015

COUGARS

  • Their habitats are mountains, hilly woodlands, and southern swamps;southwestern Canada, the United States west of the Rocky Mountains and in southern Florida,Mexico,Central America and South America
  • Their diet consists of deer ,rabbits, hares, raccoons ,and rodents
  • Their predators and threats are bears, wolves, and humans
  • Their scientific names are the Felis Concolo
  • Their lifespans are an average of12 years

TOUCANS

  • Toucans eat mostly fruit, but also eat bird eggs, insects, and tree frogs
  • Their large bill allows them to cool in the hot environment that they live in
  • Its bill is very light because it is made out of keratin
  • Its bill is not used as a weapon, but many animals are intimidated by its size
  • Although the beak of the toucan is not used as a weapon,it is a useful tool for eating fruits

MACAWS

  • Wild Scarlet Macaws eat mostly fruits and seeds including the hard seeds
  • Scarlet macaws are endangered due to habitat loss and capture as pets
  • The Scarlet Macaw's usual habitats are the emergent layers of the rainforest
  • Scarlet Macaws can fly at speeds up to 35 miles per hour
  • Macaws are the largest parrots in the world

RED EYED TREE FROG

  • The red-eyed tree frog is an arboreal hylid native to Neotropical rainforests where it ranges from Mexico, through Central America, to Colombia. I
  • These nighttime eaters eat flies, crickets, moths, grasshoppers, and sometimes even smaller frogs!
  • Its lifespan is up to 5 years
  • Its predators are Bats, owls, snakes, tarantulas, toucans, and young alligators.
  • The scientific name is the Agalychnis callidryas

SLOTHS

  • Sloths sleep during the day.sleep about 15 to 18 hours each day, hanging upside down
  • Sloths are part of the order Pilosa and are therefore related to anteaters, which sport a similar set of specialized claws.
  • Sloths are omnivores. They may eat insects, small lizards and carrion, however, their diet consists mostly of buds
  • Sloths live in the tropical rainforest of Central and South America
  • Of those, the pygmy sloth is critically endangered and the maned sloth is vulnerable.

Bromeliad

  • Bromeliads are related to the pineapple family
  • The animals that die on it decompose the bromeliad with nutrients
  • There are more than 2,700 species of bromeliads
  • Bromeliads are native to the Neotropics. One species now thrives in western Africa, and is thought to have been introduced accidentally.
  • The bromeliad is in the family Bromeliaceae

LIANAS

  • Lianas are a type of climbing vine found throughout tropical rainforests
  • When lianas reach the top of the canopy they often spread to other trees or wrap themselves around other lianas
  • Lianas are thick, twisted vines which loop around tree trunks to reach the sunlight
  • Lianas are especially characteristic of tropical moist deciduous forests and rainforests, including temperate rainforests.
  • Lianas may be found in many different plant families

PASSION FLOWERS

  • The passion flower is one of the most elaborate of all flowers found in the rainforest
  • They are native to the Western Hemisphere and mostly grown in temperate climate gardens
  • It's located in many tropical and semi-tropical areas from North America to South America
  • It's known historically for being in gardens of Aztec priests and kings
  • Its scientific name is Passiflora

VICTORIAN WATER LILLY

  • The genus name was given in honour of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.
  • In South America it grows in the backwaters of rivers in the Amazon basin, the Guianas and the Pantanal
  • Pests and diseases are kept at bay with the provision of plenty of rich fertiliser, but aphids can be a problem
  • If the plant becomes pot-bound, the crown tends to lift until it is raised out of the water
  • Although not currently thought to be threatened, this plant lives in a highly specialised habitat

FUNGUS

  • Most fungi are closely associated with dead or living plants, and sometimes with animals
  • Fungi grow in virtually every area of the planet — they occupy tropical biomes as well as temperate zones
  • Fungi feed by absorbing nutrients from the organic material in which they live
  • Genetic studies have shown that fungi are more closely related to animals than to plants
  • They may become noticeable when fruiting, either as mushrooms or as molds

LANDSCAPE

  • Tropical rainforests are located near the equator
  • Other tropical rainforests are located in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands and West Africa
  • Temperate rainforests are found along some coasts in temperate zones
  • The largest temperate rainforests are found on the Pacific coast of North America
  • They stretch from Oregon to Alaska for 1,200 miles

WEATHER

  • The climate of a tropical rainforest is very hot and wet
  • The average temperatures of a tropical rainforest are about 80 degrees F all year round with an exception of cool nights
  • The humidity of a tropical rainforest is usually 85%
  • During the day it is usually 80% and at night it is usually even higher at 95%
  • The reason for so much humidity is that all of the sun shine forms water vapor, which forms clouds, which turn into rain.

FUN FACTS!

  • An area of a rainforest the size of a football field is being destroyed each second!
  • Giant bamboo plants can grow about 9 inches a day!
  • 80%of Australian rainforest flowers are not found anywhere else in the world
  • 1 out of 4 ingredients in our medicine is from rainforest plants
  • About 2,000 trees per minute are cut down in the rainforests
