By 1915,
America was officially film crazed

By 1920, 40 million Americans were going to the movies each week

Hollywood, not just a city, but also an industry, a lifestyle and an aspiration, was officially crowned when the “Hollywoodland” sign was erected in 1923

What does the rest of the world do?

Most filmmakers just imitated what was coming out of Hollywood

But some took an original approach to filmmaking, forming movements that would have an enduring effect of cinema

EXPRESSIONISM
A term used to denote the use of distortion and exaggeration for emotional effect

EXPRESSIONISM
an artistic style in which the artist attempts to depict not objective reality, but the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events arouse in them

In this movement, the production designers became the stars.

Nosferatu - 1922

By the mid 1920's, the ban on German cinema was lifted and German films were highly regarded as among the best in the world

German studios, like UFA, were attracting foreign filmmakers. Including a young Alfred Hitchcock.

Metropolis - 1927

Although the movement only lasted about 7 years, it is still widely used as an approach to film style.
