  • 10/31/1517
  • 95 Theses posted on the door of the 'All Saints' Church'
  • Began over in Germany
  • Spread quick to other areas in Europe
  • John Calvin was also instrumental in "reform"

MARTIN LUTHER

  • Baptized catholic as a baby
  • After going to college and a brief stint in law school
  • Luther was unhappy with college education
  • After a near death experience he decided to become a monk
  • Was eventually ordained as a priest in the Catholic Church

LUTHER'S STUDIES

  • Luther frequently studied the bible
  • He was unhappy as a priest and monk
  • Luther felt like ironically he was more distanced than God
  • Martin Luther found "discrepancies" between doctrine and bible
  • He began to form the '95 Theses'

95 THESES

  • Spoke strongly against the sale of indulgences
  • Angered the Pope at the time
  • Marked the beginning of reforming the catholic reform
  • Spoke against the pope's massive wealth
  • He lived extravagantly while majority of congregants were poor

IMPACT

  • Previously Catholicism had a big say in politics
  • The "reform" took a hit on their political poll
  • The modern bible became translated into vernacular
  • Many religions based off Luther's ideas formed
  • Religious wars all over Europe

  • English church slowly changed
  • King Henry declared the Vatican no longer had a a say
  • After Luther married, it was allowed for ministers of protestant faith
  • The Pope was no longer looked as the overall leader of Europe
  • Large war broke out killing 25-40% of the German population
