  • They conducted religious ceremonies.
  • They led the army in time of war.
  • They had a council of ARISTOCRATS.

OLIGARCHY

WHEN A FEW PEOPLE SHARE POWER

  • The aristocrats were also known as OLIGARCHS.
  • Rich stayed rich, poor stayed poor.
  • Oligarchs passed laws to protect their wealth.
  • Poor had to sell themselves into slavery.
  • Military men overthrew oligarchs in 600 BCE.

TYRANNY

  • A tyranny is different than a monarchy.
  • The son does not inherit the father's power.
  • A tyrant cannot claim that he has the right to rule.
