Women usually were servants, and they rarely inherited money.

Girls received less education than males, and rarely had careers. They were paid less if they did.

MARRIED LIFE

Husbands usually beat their wives and forced them to have children.

When women married, all their inheritance went to their husband, including children.

Divorces were rare. If a wife tried to run away, she would be hunted by the police.

Women could not vote and could not own property until 1882.
