The narrator becomes obsessed with the old man's eye. We, the reader, thinks he is crazy, but he tries to convince us otherwise.

OBSESSION

"EVERY NIGHT, JUST AT MIDNIGHT, I PEERED IN ON HIM WHILE HE SLEPT."
The narrator stalked the old man for seven nights-always at midnight while he was sleeping.

DEATH

"HE WAS DEAD. STONE DEAD. HIS EYE WOULD TROUBLE ME NO MORE."
The narrator killed the old man because of his "evil eye". He felt relief once the "eye" was at last eliminated.
