  • People love petting police horses
  • Gain the trust of the public through demonstrations
  • Get noticed,  strong presence
  • 1 mounted unit = a dozen units on foot

  • Crowd control
  • Search and rescue
  • Directing traffic
  • Traffic stops
  • Arrests

Education

  • Criminal justice degree undesireable
  • Some programs require a degree, others do not
  • Must have excellent writing and communication skills

Officer Training

  • Police Academy
  • Basic patrol in cruiser, on bike, or foot for a minimum of two years  
  • Can expedite the process if you own your own horse
  • Mounted Police Academy- length of time dependent on agency 
  • Knowledge to train a horse in police work

Prefered Horse Qualities

  • Gelding, more laid back about personal space 
  • At least 6 years old
  • Quiet but not "push-button'
  • English background prefered
  • Inexpensive-Horse is cheaper to Insure

Horse Qualities Continued

  • At least 15 hands
  • 1,000 Pounds 
  • Can be scared in beginning of training but cannot be panicky 
  • Breeds prefered: Quarter horse, Paint, some Warmbloods
