-Decline of modernism. No longer impersonal,allusive, difficult poetry. Times called for a more personal and accessible approach to poetry.

Before the contemporary period nonfiction writing was not considered literature and was put in the same category as journalism and news. Nonfiction really began to become its own genre and overlap with fiction in the contemporary period
