ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND MARY TODD LIVED AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT LIFE THAT IMPACTED THE CHOICES THEY MADE.
THE EARLY LIFE OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN
- Born Febuary 12 1809
- Educated in a log house school, and Andrew Crawfords school
- Never had a full education taught himself to read and write
Mid Life -1849-1855
- Served on the Circuit Courts
- When the issue of slavery came, put law career on hold
- Often got attacked by opposing politicians
Mary Todd
- Staunch abolitionist that died in 1882 at the age of 63
- She was labeled a traitor to the South
- Thought to suffer from severe anxiety and depression
- She was put in a mental institution
- She attempted suicide twice
Lincoln and Todd's Breakup
-This happened in the early 1841.
-Lincoln broke off their relationship
-The split lasted until fall of 1842, when they resumed their relationship
-Some people believed they had a relationship one year before but kept it a secret
LINCOLN AND TODDS MARRIAGE
- Marries her November 4th 1842
- She had wealthy parents at the time
- He was a struggling lawyer at the time
Children
- They had 3 sons together
- Willie, Tad, and Robert
- Willie died at 11 years old in 1862
- Tad died 1871
- Robert put his mom in a mental hospital
WHITE HOUSE RENOVATIONS
Mary Todd had said the White House looked drab. So she ordered purple and gold drapes and green carpet. She was constantly asking Congress for more money
LINCOLNS ASSIGNATION
- April 14th 1865 at Fords theater
- Was attending "Our American Cousin" act 3, scene 2
- American war would end soon after
- He was shot by John Wilkes Booth
- Died early next morning
Mary Todd's suicide attempts
- May 18 1875
- Drank a deadly mixture of camphor and laudanum
- She was then put in an insanity institution
