Student Academic Support

  • I joined the team in September 2014.
  • This is my first HE role, I was working in adult literacy support for 6.5 years prior to joining student services.

What is Learning Development?
According to the Association for Learning Development in Higher Education (ALDinHE)...

"Learning Developers share a common desire to empower students in their learning through helping them make sense of academic practices within higher education." (ALDinHE.ac.uk)

"A Learning Development perspective encourages and supports all students to be actively engaged in their own learning and to analyse and assess their own development." (ALDinHE.ac.uk)

Student Academic Support Services include:

  • Suggested improvements to coursework writing (not proof reading for spelling and grammar!)
  • Referencing & plagiarism advice.
  • Time Management (especially useful for dyslexic students.)
  • Research skills and SPSS support (Jim!)
  • General progress throughout the year to support students' confidence.
