What is Plagiarism?

  • Copy and pasting
  • Claiming someone else's ideas, opinions, and work as your own
  • Not giving credit to authors
  • Not using citations or references

When students plagiarise

  • When they are not interested
  • When they are struggling with the work
  • When the student believes the assignment unfair
These points are from "How to Discourage Plagiarism - Tip Sheet" - Retrieved from http://mediasmarts.ca/tipsheet/how-discourage-plagiarism-tip-sheet

To avoid plagiarism, it is important to have open discourse with your child to ensure they are motivated to do the school work, so that they don't plagiarise for one of the three reasons to the left.

If your child feels they can openly discuss with you what they are struggling with, or why they feel the assignment is unfair, or if they are uninterested, a dialogue on why they feel this way and solutions can be discussed on how they can amend these issues. For example, you might be able to hire a tutor who can help them understand the assignments requirements and will then feel more confident in completing the tasks.

Emphasize that it disrespect's the author

Read "Responding to Plagiarism" to help undersntand how to deal with a student or child when they plagiaris. Retrieved from http://mediasmarts.ca/digital-media-literacy/digital-issues/online-ethics/r...

Emphasize the moral responsibility

Note that just setting up rules with consequences does not really work anymore. That students need to understand the moral dilemma of plagiarizing and have a deep understanding as to why it is wrong.

Be a role model

Make sure to purchase your books, music, and movies. Give credit to the authors, don't steal from others.
