WHAT IS AMBER ALERT?

  • Amber Alert is an emergency response system that gives information about a missing person, usually a child, by using media broadcasting or electronic roadway signs.
  • AMBER is an acronym for ""America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response""

THE STORY BEHOND AMBER ALERT

  • January 13, 1996 a nine year old girl named Amber Hagerman was kidnapped.
  • She was riding her bike in a local grocery store parking lot in Arlington, Texas.
  • Her body was found four days later in a drainage ditch.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT

  • Amber's parents collected signatures on a petition trying to pass more stringent laws to protect children.
  • The Federal Communications Commission endorced the Amber Alert system in February of 2002

PUBLICITY

  • By 2005, Amber Alerts were operational in all 50 states.
  • Amber Alerts started being displayed on electronic message signs, approved by the Federal Highway Administration.

NATIONAL MISSING CHILDREN'S DAY

  • In 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed May 25 as National Missing Children's Day.
