PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CELL DIVISION

Cells divide or reproduce for growth.

MITOSIS

Mitosis: ends up with 2 that are identical

DNA

DNA: Deoxyribonucleic Acid. Information cells “read” to know what to do. Makes up chromosomes. You have 23 pairs of chromosomes. Each of these are made of 100s or even thousands of genes.

GENETICS

The study of how biological parents and their offspring have similar or different traits.

DOMINANT

The trait that seems to appear (is observed) in and organism.

CHROMOSOMES

What makes you you. You have 23 pairs of chromosomes, in each pair, you one from your mom and one from your dad. Chromosomes also affect what gender you are. Located within a cells nucleus, made up DNA, humans have 23 pairs.

GENOTYPE

An inherited combination of alleles.

ALLELE

The different forms that a single gene can take.

RECESSIVE

The trait that seems to be hidden (is not seen) in an organism.

HEREDITARY

The passing of traits from parents to offspring.

PHENOTYPE

An organisms inherited appearance or looks.

GENES

Segments of DNA, carry hereditary instructions, passed from parents to offspring.

HETEROZYGOUS

A genotype with two different alleles.

HOMOZYGOUS

A genotype with two of the same alleles.

SEX CELLS

An egg or sperm cell. It carries half the number of chromosomes as other cell types.
