MATTER

• Anything that takes up space and has mass
• All matter is made up of atoms

ATOM

• The smallest unit of a chemical element

ELEMENT

• Each element is made of only one kind of atom
• There are about 120 elements

PERIODIC TABLE

• A list of all the chemical elements that exist in the universe (that have been discovered by humans)
• Categorizes, organizes elements according to the properties of their atoms

MOLECULE

• Formed when two or more atoms join together
• These may be two of the same or two different atoms

COMPOUND

• Formed when two or more different atoms are joined together
• Note: All compounds are also molecules, but not all molecules are compounds

SUBSCRIPTS

• They tell you how many “atoms” of each element for that molecule

COEFFICIENTS

• They multiply the number of molecules you are making
